Ebbsfleet United manager Steve Brown felt his side finally got what they deserved after Saturday’s 3-0 home victory over Farnborough.

Having not won in front of their own supporters in four matches, Brown’s men had a point to prove to disgruntled fans - and they did so thanks to a hat-trick from Matt Godden, his first league goals of the season.

This left Brown at last feeling satisfied with the outcome, arguing the difference between this performance and previous weeks’ was his side’s ability to break the deadlock.

He explained: “You need a goal so that teams have to change the way they play.

“You can come and sit back here and be disciplined behind the ball to try and take a 0-0 - and a lot of clubs will take that here.

“Then if they nick it, like Hayes & Yeading did, then they’ve got three points.

“Teams don’t necessarily come here and try to win the game, they come here to frustrate and to pick us off.

“It’s a completely different mentality when you go to an away ground and they’re forced to try and win the game because it’s their home game.

“The difference is when Matty Godden scores after 48 minutes, it changes the mentality of the opposition as they’ve got to get a goal.”

Brown also made sure Godden received the individual praise his treble deserved, backing the player to now go on and add even more to Saturday’s tally.

He added: “I’m delighted for Matt, as he’s a smashing lad and any striker that goes to a new club needs to score early.

“The longer that run continues, the harder it becomes for that striker, so I’m just delighted that he’s off the mark.

“Hopefully he can relax a little now, knowing he’s got those league goals under his belt now.

“Like I’ve always said, he’s too good not to score goals so let’s hope they’re the first of many.”

Having handed recent signing Brendan Kiernan his first start on the right, Brown also felt his side’s width improved with all three goals originating from wide areas.

He said: “Matt Johnson’s done a terrific fill in job for me.

“Let’s be honest, he’s not a wide player.

“It’s no secret I’ve been looking for a wide man for a long, long time and maybe a criticism that’s been levelled at me from above is that I take a long time to pick players I want to come in.

“The upside is that if you do take your time, then eventually the right one will come up and I think we’ve got the right one in Brendan Kiernan.

“If we can get him fit, then we’ve already seen he’s strong and quick with two good feet.”

Brown added: “You know I always like two good wide players, but Matt’s been filling in for me while I’ve been trying to get Alex Osborn fit.

“Chris Sessegnon came on today and looked very good on the right wing too.

“I felt the balance of the side was a lot better today, as we had two out and out wide players on the pitch.

“What Matt Johnson now needs to do is to be patient and wait for an opportunity in centre midfield, which I’m sure will come.”

Saturday’s result moves the Fleet up to second in the table and they now travel to Eastbourne Borough on Saturday (3pm).
