Bob Peeters feels simplicity is the key to getting the very best out of Callum Harriott in a Charlton shirt.

The 20-year-old has spent most of the season on the bench but returned to the starting XI last Tuesday for the 2-2 draw at Leeds United.

Harriott did enough to retain his place for Saturday’s 1-0 win at Reading and afterwards the Addicks head coach explained why he had been kept on the fringes up until now.

Peeters said: “Callum was struggling a bit because we gave him a lot of information on the way we wanted him to play.

“For me he needs to play a little bit simpler, just hold the ball and play it so we can progress as a team.

“In the beginning, he wanted to be decisive every time.

“He wanted to dribble and please the fans and I said ‘You don’t need to please the fans, you need to please the team’ and that is what he has been doing.

“His first touch was good, he held up the ball and he worked very, very hard.

“This is the Callum Harriott we want to see and then he will help Igor Vetokele up front as well.”

Peeters also conceded he had some pre-match reservations over picking Morgan Fox in the left-back position but admitted the academy graduate proved at Reading why he can be relied on.

The Valley boss said: “I was about to choose Lawrie Wilson on the left side, but then again he is playing against his stronger foot.

“So I chose Morgan Fox because he is after Rhoys Wiggins and he is our second left-back.

“He did brilliantly – he stood his ground.

“I think he was a bit under pressure at Fulham where he did not have his best game but against Reading he proved we can bank on him.

“We have a solid team and for me that is important.”

The Belgian was full of praise for the club’s travelling support after his side’s 1-0 victory at the Madejski.

Charlton were under pressure for large amounts of the game but Peeters believes the noise from the away end helped his team over the line.

He said: “They were fantastic – they backed us up when we were in trouble.

“They see the players work very, very hard and they do everything to get the result. Today the fans were brilliant.”

The Belgian also admitted he cottoned on to the new song the travelling faithful had invented for him.

Peeters said: “At first I heard them shout my name and I went over for a wave.

“But then I heard them say ‘he’s got no hair but we don’t care’.

“If we can take this atmosphere into The Valley, every opponent is going to struggle.

“I think if we can do this in our home stadium against Millwall and against Ipswich, they are going to struggle and that is what we need to do.”
