Bob Peeters has confirmed Igor Vetokele suffered a fresh injury scare in today’s 1-0 win at Reading.

Charlton broke the deadlock six minutes before the break when Chris Solly’s cross was met by a glancing header  from top scorer Vetokele.

Reading had 20 shots but the closest they came to an equaliser came after the break as Oliver Norwood’s 57th minute shot hit the post with Stephen Henderson beaten.

Vetokele was replaced by Francis Coquelin seven minutes later as the Addicks went with Callum Harriott up top and Peeters explained the heavy showers at the Madejski had been a factor in that decision.

The SE7 head coach said: “He told me that he could start the game but then the pitch got very heavy with the rain.

“In the second half he was struggling with his calf.

“He had a little injury on his calf so that’s why we took him off - to not risk him.

“Now we need to look at the situation, give him a rest and hopefully we get him right for the next game.”

Vetokele may have stolen the match winning headlines again but Peeters was keen to praise his back four for the way they kept Reading at bay.

“He scored an important goal but I’m pretty happy with the team effort,” the manager said.

“This was a big game, we predicted they are going to play a lot of long balls towards Glenn Murray and early crosses in the box.

“I told my defenders when we showed them some clips  when they come on the side left or right-back or left or right wing, they don’t take another touch they just put it in the box and they attack the ball.

“That’s where Andre Bikey and Tal Ben haim were very important.

“They defended very well.

“I don’t think they played us out of shape, it was mainly long balls and second balls where they were dangerous.

“And also what we did a little bit better than against Leeds was when the ball fell around the 18-yard box there was immediately pressure on the second ball – that’s what we did.”

Charlton defended resolutely and almost added a second on the counter late on through substitute George Tucudean, who was only denied by an excellent save from Adam Federici.

Peeters added: “At the end you know they are going to take a lot of risks and you are going to get one or two chances.

“That is why we put Tucudean on because normally if you get a chance like that he is the guy who will put it away.

“He had the game ball – if he puts that away it is 2-0, game finished.”

Peeters also questioned why the fourth official signalled six minutes of injury time.

“He didn’t do it and then there was six, nearly seven minutes of injury time.

“I don’t know where that came from – he told me six subs is three minutes and then your player was one minute on the ground.

“I said ‘OK, three plus one is four, not six’.

“Then he tries to explain the fourth official and after six minutes I said to him ‘Ok, now it has finished?’ ‘No, we add another 30 seconds’.

“I don’t know where the logic is in it but when we were 1-0 down in Bournemouth it was only three min  utes and there were also five or six subs.

“Again, we stood our ground, we managed to keep the result and it is a massive result before the international break.

“We have 27 points. I’m very proud of my players the way they done their job and how they finished the game.

“It was a professional performance and we have two home games now against Millwall and Ipswich and we will try to build on this victory.”
