Charlton head coach Bob Peeters took positives from his side’s battling 2-2 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road this evening.

It was a tight first half with few chances and the teams returned to the dressing rooms goal-less at the interval.

However, the game exploded into life early in the second period when Leeds midfielder Alex Mowatt gave the hosts the lead, finishing expertly into the top corner from the edge of the area after Charlton failed to clear their lines.

The Addicks were level just after the hour mark as Johann Gudmundsson capitalised on chaotic defending in the home side’s area to squeeze a shot in at Marco Silvestri’s near post.

But parity was short lived and it was that man Mowatt who struck again, this time in even more spectacular style by finding the top corner once again from outside the area.

The visitors did not give up, though, and were all square once again nine minutes from time as Gudmundsson matched Mowatt’s tally for the evening.

This time he scored from the spot after referee Graham Salisbury awarded the penalty for a tug on Tal Ben Haim at a corner.

Peeters said: “I think we started well first half, we changed sides well.

“We didn’t create a lot of chances but we were in control of the game.

“They didn’t have one single chance first half accept some set pieces.

“Second half I think again we started well.

“We knew at a certain stage they would get tired and we had some quality to bring on.

“At that moment we were in control of the game, and then the first shot they had on target was in the top corner.

“We fought back, we scored to make it 1-1 and again we controlled the game.

“And a similar goal - top corner, two shots on goal, two goals.”

Peeters admitted he hadn’t seen what happened when Charlton were awarded their spot-kick.

“The penalty incident - I didn’t see it,” he said.

“I was busy because Rhoys Wiggins was struggling with his toe so we need to take him off.

“We score 2-2, but we’re left with 10 men because we had already used our three subs.

“We needed to dig deep and you have to be happy with the point you take away.”

New loan signings Francis Coquelin and Oguchi Onyewu both made their Addicks debuts from the bench and Peeters was positive when asked about their performances.

Of Coquelin, he said, “For his first time playing with the boys - he only joined us yesterday - I think he showed a bit of quality.”

“He shows that he is a good player and his work ethic is very good.

“That’s very important and he can only grow once he gets to know the boys and the system we want to play.”

When quizzed as to whether the youngster’s month long loan from Arsenal could be extended, Peeters admitted all avenues were open.

“If a player wants to come to a team, he wants to see how the team is run and how we play,” the SE7 boss said.

“We agreed to start with a month and then if we’re happy, we’ll try to continue.”

Rhoys Wiggins was forced off injured after a collision in the build-up to Charlton’s second goal, meaning the Addicks were forced to see out the last moments with only 10 men as all their substitutes had been used.

Wiggins, sadly no stranger to long-term injuries in recent years, was seen leaving the ground in a protective boot, and Peeters said he was unsure of the extent of injury as of yet.

“They’re going to take an MRI tomorrow,” the manager revealed.

“If he has a crack in his toe it could be a long time, but we need to wait until the scan tomorrow.”
