Crystal Palace skipper Mile Jedinak saw red against Sunderland and then fired a parting shot at referee Phil Dowd for not awarding his side two penalties.

The Australian was convinced Palace were denied a pair of spot-kicks in Monday night’s Premier League defeat.

In the end, a 3-1 reverse extended the Eagles’ winless streak to four games and they are now only above the drop zone on goal difference.

Strong penalty shouts from Fraizer Campbell and Wilfried Zaha in the first half were turned down by Dowd before he dismissed Jedinak for a second bookable offence with just minutes remaining.

Santiago Vergini was fortunate to remain on the pitch after cleaning out Campbell, let alone not concede a penalty as the Palace striker looked destined to score inside the opening minute.

The hosts’ second spot-kick appeal came just after the half hour mark, with Sunderland ahead, when Patrick van Aanholt appeared to make no contact with the ball and swiped out Zaha as he entered the area.

Jedinak said: “They were both pretty clear, he (Dowd) gave the decisions and unfortunately we have to get the brunt of them.

“It is disappointing when you don’t receive the decisions, particularly so early on and when they are that obvious.

“They (Sunderland) looked like a team that were down a little bit so it is bitterly disappointing to not come away with anything, especially at home.”

Steven Fletcher headed Sunderland ahead before a Wes Brown’s own goal levelled the scores after the break to give the hosts brief hope.

However, Jordi Gomez restored the Black Cats’ lead before Jedinak’s dismissal and a late Fletcher strike was the final nail in the coffin.

Jedinak will now miss Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford against Manchester United.

The Socceroos skipper received his first caution for a shove on Brown but could have been given a straight red for his second yellow card after the frustrated midfielder kicked out at Gomez.

“The two yellows were two yellows, he decided to give me the first one for whatever reason and the second I got caught in him (Gomez) and he (Dowd) has deemed it as a yellow card,” said Jedinak.

“I have to accept that and I am disappointed with myself to be missing the game on Saturday.

“It is an opportunity for someone else to step in.

“The boys will give a good account of themselves at Old Trafford, I have no doubt about that.”
