Neil Warnock’s side abruptly ended their unbeaten run of four league matches with a dismal 2-0 defeat to Hull City. In true Crystal Palace fashion this performance has led to a meltdown on social media and on the online forums, a meltdown which is completely unjustified.

It can be incredible how short the memory is of some fans. Palace had just come off the back of a brilliant four-game run that accumulated eight points, which included going to Goodison Park and returning home with the spoils. It’s not realistic to believe we would go unbeaten forever, we are in an incredibly tough league and perhaps have forgotten that thanks to our incredible season last year.

With the combination of Palace on a role and Hull City having had a slow start to the season, there was certainly good cause for optimism ahead of the game, not to mention the fact we took all six points from the Tigers last season. Perhaps this positive combination of factors was the reason why Palace fans had developed almost a sense of arrogance before kick-off.

Hull City are a whole different monster than what they have been in recent years, they have spent an extortionate amount of money while building this squad. Despite receiving a very attractive amount of money for Shane Long, they have still dug deep and spent a net total of £22.5million on their squad this season.

The transfer fees paid for Abel Hernandez and Jake Livermore combined amounts to the entire value of Crystal Palace’s XI on Saturday, which really puts the financial gulf between the two clubs into perspective.  Saying that, spending over the odds on transfers doesn’t equal guaranteed success.

Crystal Palace have found themselves in financial ruin twice in the past 15 years so it is understandable for the wealthy consortium, including Steve Parish and Steve Browett, to be tentative with their money. Many of the Palace faithful lamented an apparent lack of ambition from CPFC2010 this summer, and the criticism was certainly fuelled by watching fellow relegation rivals such as West Ham, QPR and Hull spend bucket loads on their squad.

The fans believed instantly that because of the amount of money being spent, these sides will certainly be leaving us behind. This is an incredibly naïve way to view football because Palace have as much chance as anyone of finishing above the likes of QPR and Hull. The club has sculpted a side with a strong core and a group of lads who will run themselves into the ground for each other.

This attribute alone is enough to overcome any of our relegation rivals and in the long run it’ll certainly pay off as opposed to having big time Charlies jumping ship when the going gets tough. Our level-headed chairmen certainly have an overwhelming amount of positive attributes, despite keeping their hands firmly in their pockets.

With our cautious approach to transfers, it comes with knowing should the worst happen and Palace do fail to survive in the Premier League, we won’t be facing financial ruin. Furthermore, who would want a billionaire owner when it comes with the risk of being turned into Crystal Palace Eagles or changing the kit to blue and white stripes?

The owners are undoubtedly the best thing that’s happened to the club and the fans would take guaranteed long-term survival over the all-or-bust approach any day of the week.
