Bromley overcame a sluggish start to pick up a 2-1 win at Farnborough, the first time they had enjoyed victory at Cherrywood Road since 1985.

Preparations for the game were not helped when a car carrying five players was involved in a minor accident en route, meaning they did not arrive at the ground until 2.30pm.

And it showed in the first half hour as Bromley were all at sixes and sevens, not that Farnborough were any better.

The first real chance of the game fell to Pierre Joseph-Dubois on nine minutes, who headed over Joe Anderson’s free-kick.

Ferdinand Takyi blasted the ball out of the ground at the other end following good approach work.

Jamie Slabber found the side-netting from a narrow angle after Danny Waldren lofted a pass over a home defender.

Louis Dennis was hauled down on the edge of the area on the half hour before shooting the subsequent free-kick over the bar.

Dennis deserved better in the 36th minute as he brilliantly bought down an Adam Bailey-Dennis high pass to beat two defenders, only for debutant Farnborough keeper Craig Ross to save with his legs.

From the resulting throw in, the ball was worked back to Waldren whose half volley was palmed away by Ross.

Waldren’s header was hacked off the line by Ollie Treacher as half-time loomed but neither side were able to make the breakthrough and went in level at the break.

Bromley opened the scoring 10 minutes after the restart when Anderson’s free-kick found its way through a crowd of players to Bailey-Dennis on the right of the goalmouth.

The defender cleverly lifted the ball back into the centre of goal where Joseph-Dubois headed home from close range.

Two minutes later it was 2-0.

Adam Birchall and Anderson combined before the latter’s cross was cleared from the feet of Slabber, but only as far as Waldren, who promptly rattled home an unstoppable shot from just inside the area.

Farnborough reduced the arrears in the 59th minute as Adam Brice flicked on a Paul Rodger’s free-kick past a hesitant Seb Brown into the corner of the net.

Birchall is still looking for that elusive first goal and dragged a good opportunity wide before being substituted, while Ross made an excellent save to deny Dennis before he too was replaced moments later.

New signing Duncan Culley, along with Moses Ademola, injected new life into Bromley’s play.

Culley was unlucky when he turned his marker only to be denied by a smart save from Ross before Waldren’s long range effort flew just over moments later.

Bromley had to endure a nail-biting last five minutes as Farnborough piled on the pressure in their quest for a late equaliser.

A searching cross from the left by Phil Page was cleared off the line by Waldren and Brice headed over an open goal after meeting a corner in the dying seconds.

But the Lillywhites held on to remain second within two points of leaders Boreham Wood.

Bromley are at home to Gosport Borough on Saturday.
