Yoni Buyens believes the confidence installed into him by Charlton head coach Bob Peeters is the reason for his impressive start to the season.

The midfielder, on a season-long loan from Standard Liege, scored the only goal of the game as the Addicks beat Watford on Saturday to move up to fifth in the Championship table.

Prior to linking up with Peeters in the summer, Buyens had played alongside his current boss at Belgian club Lierse SK when he was a teenager.

And having endured a tough time at Liege last term, Saturday’s match winner admits the Addicks chief has played a huge part in his return to form.

He said: “Last year wasn’t an easy year for me at Standard because I didn’t have the confidence of the coach but this year I feel like I do.

“I can play my game, ask for the ball and do what I want.

“He gives me the belief that I like to have.

“That is really important to me and contributes to my level of performances.

“He says everything that he thinks and that is important for the group. He is straight talking.”

Buyens added: “It is always nice working like that because he can say something with a little bit of humour but you get the message, and that’s very important.

“In the right moments he is hard and at other moments he is funny.

“That is really important for the spirit and the focus.

“He will always be, and always has been, aware so that we don’t get sloppy.

“When I played with him when I was younger he was the most difficult player to play with because he was always on your back and it is still the same as a coach.

“When something isn’t right or good the he will tell you. That is a good thing and I like it.

“To be a manager you have to be like that.

“You have to get an idea and try to get everyone on the same train and to think in the same way.”

Saturday’s result was the Addicks’ fourth successive home win and Buyens believed they got their tactics spot on against a dangerous Watford side.

He explained: “We left the possession of the ball to them and we were well organised didn’t give away big spaces between the lines

“One or two times they were dangerous and it wasn’t an easy game.

“It’s our third league home win against another strong side and it is good at the moment.

“They’re a good team and they will get a lot of points this season but we had to play our game and leaving them with possession was a good choice.

“We tried to counter attack after we went 1-0 up because we know we are strong at that.

“Tactically everything was good.”
