Being a Charlton Athletic fan on transfer deadline day is akin being Emmanuel Frimpong on a football pitch.

We desperately want to get involved, but we know if we did we’d just make ourselves look ridiculous and prove that we shouldn’t be there.

The twice-yearly Sky Sports News extravaganza has always been aimed at fans of other clubs – and this transfer deadline day was no exception.

Happily, this year there was no desperate requirement for last minute panic signings, with the squad deep in most positions, and the loan window opening in a few days time.

There is one position, though, that will need to be bolstered during that opening – an extra forward man surely must join the club.

The lack of another striker signing before the closing of the window was not for the want of trying.

Charlton had been heavily linked with a French Second Division striker Andy Delort since the very dawn of time, and for long periods of our pursuit it looked like we would get their man.

First things first – Delort is rated.

Charlton’s scouts advised the management to make him a main target for the club throughout the summer and they were poised to pay big money for him.

However, the unprofessional social media conduct of the then Tours FC player perhaps shows us we’ve been let somewhat off the hook here.

Teasing, enticing and tormenting the fans of Charlton, Brentford, Wolves and Wigan alike, Delort may have succeeded in drumming up enough interest in his services to increase his wage demands, but at the same time proved his heart would not have been in SE7.

Had the signing of Delort been completed, I’m certain it would have ended in tears -additional to the teardrop already tattooed on Andy’s face.

So very gangster is our Andy.

There was some transfer news announced on Saturday, however, and from my living room of all places.

Frédéric Bulot, an exciting left-sided midfielder completed his loan from feeder club Standard Liege at exactly the time I was being picked up by a member of the club’s media team to be taken to Brighton.

Therefore the website announcement was posted from the comfort of my sofa.

Eat your heart out Jim White.

It was hardly the best kept secret of all time, as the Frenchman had posted a photo of his room service meal from his London hotel room the night before.

A burger and chips with TWO chocolate deserts! Outrageous.

Never would have happened in Derek ‘Killer’ Hales’ day - he would have gone the whole hog with a Weatherspoons Burger & Pint deal without a second thought.

Bulot’s slightly unhealthy choice of sustenance isn’t the most controversial image he has ever added to social media having professed a tendency to ‘smoke weed every day’ on his Instagram account while at Standard Liege, with a photo appearing to back up his boast.

Hopefully while with the Addicks he is going to only allow his munchies for success be a talking point.

It’s been a fantastic start to the season and positivity runs through the veins of the club.

A successful dip into the loan market and this club could be going places.

Come on you reds!
