Former Addicks keeper Bob Bolder is set to take part in Sunday’s Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

Bolder will be joined by three other members of staff from the Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) as they look to complete the 100-mile cycling challenge for the second year in a row in a bid to raise £3,000 for the charity.

Prudential RideLondon-Surrey100 will start in the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, then follow a 100 mile route on closed roads through the capital and into Surrey’s stunning countryside.

Bolder, who made 296 appearances between the posts for the Addicks between 1986 and 19994, has been busy gearing up for the second instalment.

He said: “I live on the Kent coast and we have a lovely ride down here, the Viking trail.

“Matt Parish and Dean Redwood have been down and had a little 40-50 mile practice ride.

“Also a few weeks ago I was in Edale in the Pennines and scaled one daunting hill a few mornings before breakfast, so was happy with that.

“Prostate Cancer UK is a fantastic charity and the more people know about it and raise funds to combat the disease the better.

“It’s about letting people know that it’s out there and trying to change that male mentality and getting us blokes to go and get checked out. I certainly have.

“Wearing the Prostate Cancer UK top on the way round is inspiring too.

“You get amazing support, as you would do for any charity, and then when people thank you afterwards as they have been affected by the disease, it’s so touching.”

The challenge will finish on The Mall in central London, and with leg-testing climbs and a route recently made famous by the world’s best cyclists, it will be a truly spectacular event for all involved.

Bolder added: “It’s such a thrill to cycle through the streets of London and also to take in the beautiful scenery on the outskirts.

“This will be another test of character for all of us and we look forward to completing the challenge together as a team.”

Prostate Cancer UK director of fundrasing Mark Bishop praised the Addicks quartet for agreeing to complete the challenge again.

He said: “It’s great to see the Charlton Athletic Community Trust taking part in Ride London to raise funds and awareness.

“Our football family continues to grow and the success of the recent London to Amsterdam cycle ride, when we raised more than £180,000, not to mention the countless Men United match days up and down the country, showed how clubs continually go the extra mile.

“Together we will continue to fight against deadly opponents and the money raised will help us combat a disease that kills one man every hour.”
