First half goals from Magaye Gueye and Aiden O’Brien were sufficient to allow the Millwall U21 side claim a good victory at Welling United.

Although they may have been a little fortunate to be two goals to the good at the break, there can be little doubt that the young Lions team were good value for their win over the full ninety minutes.

Kieron St Aimie came close for the Wings in the opening minutes but Denzel Gerrar somehow kept his shot out at the foot of the post.

Harry Beautyman, Rod Young and Jamal Fyfield all had efforts on goal before Millwall went ahead slightly against the run of play.

Magaye Gueye put in a performance to suggest that he will be pushing for a first team place and his power and pace sent him clear of the Welling defence before he finished emphatically.

Joshua Siafa’s physical tackle on Fyfield caused a skirmish but referee David Rock showed leniency in taking no further action than to issue a stern warning.

Charlie Gorman volleyed high and wide before a defensive blunder presented Millwall with a second goal just before the break. Aiden O’Brien was alert to collect a loose back pass before shooting beyond Lee Butcher in the Welling goal.

After Kyron Farrell wasted a great chance early in the second half the game became fragmented with a constant stream of substitutions.

Millwall enjoyed plenty of possession and Welling struggled to get into the game but chances were few and far apart.

Lee Butcher did well to tip a Jack Powell cross off O’Brien’s head and Ben Thompson shot well wide from distance.

The best the Wings could muster was when Young brought down a high ball and laid it back for Ben Jefford to fire across the face of goal but nobody was able to apply the finish.
