Preparations for the new season continued well for Welling United as they stretched their unbeaten run to five games with victory at Maidstone.

It certainly wasn’t plain sailing for the Wings though, as they had to come back from a half time deficit.

Former Wings were prominent in the Stones’ strong first half display with Matt Bodkin causing problems throughout.

Injury to Ben Jefford after just twenty minutes didn’t help Welling’s cause, and Frankie Beale replaced him.

Jay May headed a Bodkin cross over after Jack Parkinson had sent the winger clear.

Bodkin was the architect of the opening goal one minute before the break when he found further space on the right wing and fired in a shot that was blocked out only as far as Dan Parkinson and the midfielder lashed home.

Changes were made at regular intervals. After Steve Watt had headed another Jack Parkinson cross over, Welling grew into the game and Kieron St Aimie just failed to finish a long through ball.

Eventually, Welling drew level when Jamie Day’s corner caused chaos and Rod Young fired home off Stones goalkeeper LeeWorgan.

Young then set up Jake Gallagher but his shot was deflected just wide before the busy winger rasped in another effort that rattled the crossbar.

It wasn’t all one way though and Jack Parkinson was close with a drive after Michael Phillips touched a free kick into his path.

Another Young shot was saved before Welling went ahead. Once again, the Stones struggled to clear and this time Zak Fagan was placed perfectly to larrup home a shot that gave Worgan no hope.

In injury time Welling almost paid for giving away a cheap free kick on the edge of the penalty area. Phillips cross found May but his powerful header flew back off the post.
