Edgar Davids could be set for a shock move to Southern Counties East League outfit Greenwich Borough.

The 41-year-old won 74 caps for Holland during an illustrious playing career which also included spells with Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, Spurs and Crystal Palace.

Davids is currently commenting on the World Cup for Dutch TV but has been in regular contact with Greenwich Borough chairman Perry Skinner, who remains confident a deal can be thrashed out once the former Barnet player-manager returns to London.

He explained: “Edgar was due back from Brazil over the weekend but because the Netherlands have done so well he has been asked to stay on and do some more commentary.

“I’ve been on the phone to him a lot and we've been discussing ideas.

“We are talking and he is keen. We are confident and we are going to have a sit-down meeting when he gets back to hopefully finalise our plans.

“I would say we are 70 percent sure he'll come on board.

“If you would have said there is a good chance of Edgar Davids playing for Greenwich Borough a few years ago they would have said you were mad.”

Greenwich Borough play their home matches at Dartford’s Princes Park after agreeing a two-year extension to the ground share deal in March, but the long-term aim is to return the club back to their spiritual home.

Skinner added: “This is part of the club's five year plan to be playing Conference football.

“By that time the plan is that the club will be playing in its own purpose built complex back in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.”
