After comfortably avoiding relegation in Welling United’s first season in the top tier of non-league football, Jamie Day already has his sights set on doing it all again.

Neighbours Dartford were relegated at the end of their second season in the Conference on Monday after winning promotion via the play-offs in 2012.

But Day is determined the same fate will not befall the Wings as they look to build on this year’s solid effort back at Premier level.

He said: “It has happened quite a lot to a club that has previously gone up over the past five or six years so we know the second year is probably a bit more difficult to the first.

“We know we have to work right over the summer and try not to fall towards that and try and progress if we can.

“I think at the minute we are not going to raise the budget, it is going to stay the same, but hopefully it might change towards the start of the season if we can get a better sponsorship in.

“Hopefully if the league get a sponsor in that will be good for us, but we’ll stick as we are at the minute and see how it goes.”

Day is confident of keeping hold of his key players and also hinted at potential new signings.

He said: “We have got a couple of our current players who we have spoken to over the last few weeks and we have a couple that we will be talking to in the coming weeks.

“We have also got targets we want to speak to as well, so I’m hopeful we will keep the ones we want to keep and the squad will hopefully be what we want it to be.”

Before that, though, the Wings play host to Southport on Saturday in the final game of the season.

Although the club is safe Day is not looking to tamper too much with his first team selection for the visit of the Sandgrounders.

The Wings boss said: “We’re going to try and finish on a high and get the win and hopefully carry that over to next season.

“Saturday for us is about trying to get the three points and finish on a positive.

“I think at the start of the season the goal was to not get relegated and credit to the boys for keeping us up with a lot of games to spare.

“We’ve had some disappointing results over the last five or six games but overall it has been a successful season.”
