Jose Riga was delighted to see Dorian Dervite head home an injury time goal to secure his first victory as Charlton boss.

The French defender powered in from Johnnie Jackson’s late corner to secure the victory over AFC Bournemouth which moved the Addicks out of the Championship relegation zone.

And Riga, whose side have yet to concede a goal since he took over last Tuesday, was elated Charlton’s solid base gave them the platform to snatch a crucial victory.

He said: “The defence gives confidence to the midfield and the midfield gives confidence to the strikers.

“Every story starts with the defensive aspect.

“You have no hope of winning a game if first of all you are not good defensively.

“Certainly in our situation we have to find a way to play.

“You get no points for style, but you do for results. We are looking for efficiency.

“We know very well what we miss, but we are sure that we have a team.

“I knew when I arrived we’d have to work hard to find a solution together and finally we’ve found that. I’m happy because we deserve it, but it is only one step.

“We will win in confidence when we are not in trouble defensively.”

Riga added: “We deserved to win and what gives me pleasure is that it’s happened at The Valley.

“It was in front of our fans and I’ve said to my players the first thing is to be a very good team at home.

“If you want to be able to have good results at the end of the season, it starts at home.”

Although it was Dervite who nodded the only goal of the game, young midfielder Diego Poyet again came away with a large number of plaudits.

The 18-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, has made himself a fixture in the side since making his debut at Oxford in January and Riga is aware of the situation.

The SE7head coach said: “Contracts is our business, but be sure we have our eyes very open with this.

“When I arrived I saw Diego Poyet for 20 minutes in a training session and I immediately had my opinion of him.

“Because of his family and home environment he will always receive good advice, and he feels good with the way we try to play.

“He is managing his game and the ball.

“Asking for possession and for someone of his age this is quite rare.

“I think he is happy at this moment.

“Does he have the level (to play in the Premier League)? Maybe I shouldn’t say it too fast first of all for us.

“He will be a very good player.”
