WELLING assistant manager Barry Ashby is looking forward to seeing his side back in action following a three-week weather enforced layoff.

The Wings have not played at all since a 3-1 triumph at Chester on February 1 but are scheduled to travel to struggling Tamworth on Saturday with the storms and flood problems which have hit the country finally beginning to ease.

And Ashby cannot wait to see the squad back on the field of play following a prolonged and frustrating absence.

“On a good note it has given us a bit of time to get back a couple of lads who have been ill or had niggling injuries,” explained Welling’s number two.

“But we would like to have played games, so it is great to get back to the league programme.

“The lads train every week to play games and when they can’t, they get a bit frustrated.”

Ashby added: “Everyone is looking forward to getting back on it.

“When we haven’t had a game at the end of the week it has been quite difficult to keep the guys’ spirits up because they want to play.

“I’m just hopeful that we’re not too rusty and that the break hasn’t put us out of our stride too much.

“There is a possibility it may take us a bit of time to get into the game on Saturday, but on the other hand we could be chomping at the bit.

“Sometimes a break can do you a world of good.

“On the other hand it can put you out of sync, but I’m pretty sure the boys will be ready to go.

“It is big game for both clubs, we want to make sure that we are stabilised in mid-table and they need to get themselves up from the bottom.”

Welling currently sit 13th in the Conference but Ashby says the club have still got plenty to play for between now and the end of the season.

He said: “Everyone in middle part of the table has got to be very wary of what is below you because teams are still picking up points.

“We want to get any many points as possible and if that gets us near the top five or six then fantastic, but our main aim this season has always been to stay in this division.

“If you’re honest and looking at the league, the budgets and consider that we’ve just been promoted, then I think we have done fairly well.

“We have left some points out on the grass.

“There have been games where we could have turned a loss into a draw or a draw into a win, so we have lost a few points.

“We have got to be fairly happy where we are but we are not finished, and hopefully with four or five games to go there is still a lot to play for.”
