Wings boss wants four more wins to secure safety
WELLING boss Jamie Day says four more wins should see his side retain their Conference status.
Day, however, feels his side need to be more consistent.
The Wings find themselves comfortably mid-table with plenty of games of the season remaining, and the Park View Road chief wants to guarantee another season of top flight non-league football as soon as possible.
“There are 16 games left,” he said.
“We probably need to win four which puts you on 52 points, which I feel should be enough to stay up.
“We want to get those four games down as soon as possible and hopefully we can start this Saturday.
“We don’t want to get caught up and be having to win games towards the end of the season.
“There are enough games to hit that target.
“Where we’ve had a good start to the season, it has sort of helped up now as we’ve been a little inconsistent and just get need to get back on it and get a few good results.”
Welling are only six points off the top six but the boss is just looking to consolidate in the league before even thinking about a possible late surge for the play-offs.
Day, however, feels the Wings’ form needs to pick up before that is a possibility.
He said: “I think we probably just need to get a little bit of form back again and just to consolidate our place in the table.
“Obviously we’ve got a good little gap between ourselves and the bottom four, we want to keep that going.
“We would like more wins.
“I think at the start of the season we were just looking to stay in the league, which again is our priority.
“If we get near the play-offs it would be an unbelievable achievement.”
Welling head into Saturday’s encounter with Chester on the back of a 2-1 defeat at home to Alfreton and Day isn’t expecting an easy trip to the Deva Stadium.
He said: “It’s going to be a tough game, we don’t want to get caught up in getting dragged down with the bottom four or five teams.
“They’ve changed their manager and they’ve got a couple of wins.
“They were beaten on Saturday and we’re away from home.
“It is a long trip and one we need to get something from, without putting any pressure on the boys.
“We just need to be a bit more consistent in our performances.
“If we can do that, hopefully we can get a good result on Saturday.”
Friday marks the final day for permanent transfers in the Conference and Day is still looking to strengthen, but is wary of any further loan deals.
“We would like to add,” he explained.
“We’ve got four loans already so we have to be careful with the last one because we can only have five in a squad of 16.
“So we will try and strengthen when we can.
“We don’t want to rush and sign just anyone, we might have to be patient.
“Hopefully we can get a couple in before the deadline on Friday.”
The Wings boss also said he has no injury concerns ahead of the trip to Chester.
He added: “I should have a full squad to pick from and hopefully we can put in a good performance.”
