Welling United 3-0 Woking

Having been the better team, Joe Healy’s second half brace, and a goal from Lee Clarke enabled the Wings to bounce back from their failure to beat the bottom two teams in their previous two league games.

Jamie Day made changes to the line-up, some enforced.

The departure of Fraser Franks to Luton Town necessitated the return of Doug Bergqvist to central defence.

Lee Clarke and Ross Lafayette returned from injury and Josh Wakefield made his debut on loan from AFC Bournemouth.

Although the first half was goal-less, the Wings had the better of it and created the first opening.

Kurtis Guthrie did well to bring down a long ball then crossed low for Harry Beautyman.

The midfielder, whose only Wings goal was at Woking earlier in the season, was at full stretch and could not keep his effort down.

Clarke then had a shot on target but his effort lacked the power to trouble Sam Beasant in the Woking goal.

Tenacity from Guthrie, who kept control despite being bundled over twice, allowed him to get in another low cross to Lafayette but once again Clarke was unable to get sufficient purchase in his shot and Beasant tidied up.

Referee Kevin Johnson cautioned Bergqvist for a cynical pull back but the numbers were evened up when Kieran Murtagh earned himself a silly booking for failure to retreat quickly from a Welling free-kick inside their own half.

Wakefield’s clever pass found Healy but his flick volley was unable to stretch Beasant.

It appeared Woking were keen to make their presence felt and an ugly challenge by John Goddard on Blaine Hudson again had the referee reaching for his book.

Lafayette then did superbly to control on the left wing before pulling back to Beautyman who fired in a rocket which rattled the bar with Beasant beaten.

Guthrie then made space for himself before hitting a shot that was tipped over by Beasant.

Just before half time already booked Murtagh made a needless reckless challenge that gave the referee no choice but to show him a second yellow card and send him off.

Woking had a let off early in the second period when Beautyman’s corner was met by Bergqvist, whose header was fumbled onto the bar and over.

A combination of Guthrie and Lafayette saw the latter fire over then a Beautyman effort swerved violently and was beaten out by Beasant but nobody was following up to finish.

Loui Fazakerley’s poor challenge saw him added to the referee’s growing list before Welling broke the deadlock just after the hour.

Baily Cargill burst down the left wing and put in a perfect low cross to present Healy with a tap in.

Garry Hill made a double change for Woking but it made little difference to the one sided flow of the game and Welling added a second with 15 minutes remaining.

Mike Cestor climbed all over Guthrie in the penalty area and Mr Johnson had little option other than to award a penalty.

Beasant did brilliantly to beat out Lafayette’s spot kick but Healy followed up and finished clinically.

Further cautions for Hudson and Woking’s Reece Beckles followed before Welling killed the game off with seven minutes remaining through Clarke’s opportunist finish.

Wakefield marked his debut with a caution but Woking failed to trouble Lee Butcher who recorded his first clean sheet for over two months.
