DEVASTATED Welling United were stunned by a last gasp goal robbing them of a famous double over Grimsby Town.
Lee Clarke's one match suspension, and the fact that Harry Beautyman was short of full fitness meant that Jamie Day had to select himself and he played a superb match protecting the back four alongside the outstanding Jake Gallagher.
Early on Grimsby showed their intent and Craig Disley shot over from a half cleared cross.
Quick intervention from goalkeeper Lee Butcher was needed as the hosts chased a long ball but Welling stunned the Mariners by going ahead in the 11th minute.
Ross Lafayette sent Kurtis Guthrie away and his deep cross was controlled well by Joe Healy before his tight skill enabled him to lift a flick into the roof of the net.
Sam Hatton required treatment for a cut above the right eye but was soon back into the fray and the Mariners came close to restoring parity when Blaine Hudson's clearance off the line came out to Lenell John-Lewis whose effort was pushed around the post by Butcher.
Replacement referee Mr. Blackhouse frustrated both teams with poor decision making. Guthrie became the first player to be cautioned and Grimsby's Clayton McDonald as he brandished yellow cards as if they were Christmas treats in a game that was never dirty.
Once again, Welling were required to make a goal-line clearance when Gallagher chested away McDonald's header.
A poor Hatton free kick bounced back off the Welling wall before Scott Kerr incurred the wrath of the referee and earned himself a booking.
Early in the second period, Gallagher was booked for a tackle that was barely a foul.
Guthrie was withdrawn for a loanee Aristide Bassele before the hosts tested Butcher.
Scott Neilson showed fleet of foot that might have impressed Strictly Come Dancing judge Len Goodman to pass defender after defender before he unleashed a shot that Butcher did well to beat away.
Despite Grimsby's possession, outstanding defensive work meant they created few clear cut opportunities although Alex Rodman twice went close.
On a rare break, Healy and Baily Cargill combined well to send Alex Dyer away but his ball into the middle was just out of reach of Lafayette, and drifted wide.
Luck was on Welling's side when Aswad Tthomas hit the far post with a free kick and a spot of penalty area 'pinball' ensued before Shaun Pearson stabbed wide from inside the six yard box.
Pearson was lucky to escape with a yellow card with a high and cynical foul on Hudson.
Shortly before the end, a Welling break came close to finishing the game off when Bassele's effort was pushed out to Lafayette but he also saw his attempt saved by a grateful McKeown.
When Kerr shot over for the Mariners it looked as though all was up but the referee's inability to keep time allowed Grimsby one last chance 90 seconds after the additional four minutes had passed.
Although Joe Colbeck and then superb Welling captain Fraser Franks had received injury time cautions, no more than one extended minute should have been played.
Twenty one players were in the penalty area as Hatton's long throw came in and somehow Dayle Southwell netted with seconds remaining.
