AS the search for Charlton’s first back-to-back wins since April continues, Michael Morrison couldn’t hide his frustration with the Addicks’ lacklustre defeat to Ipswich.

Chris Powell’s side were caught cold on Saturday when Ipswich’s Tommy Smith was left unmarked to nod home from a corner in the fifth minute.

The early goal proved to be the decider of the uninspiring clash at The Valley and Morrison was annoyed at Charlton’s inconsistency after the game.

“Just as we look like we are going to turn the corner and we can start thinking about looking up the table, we take two steps back,” said Morrison.

“Some of the other results didn’t go our way and when you thought we were getting out of it (the relegation scrap) we have been brought back into it.

“Back-to-back wins are so important in this league and that is what we are striving for, but we haven’t found it so far this season.

“Once we get them it can move you right up the table and we are still flirting with the relegation zone, so hopefully we will get them sooner rather than later.”

Saturday was a chance to get those two straight victories for the first time since April but Charlton struggled to find the same form they did during their 2-0 against Doncaster.

“Ipswich obviously came with a game plan to start fast and they did,” said Morrison.

“I thought we had just weathered the storm when Ben Alnwick made a fabulous double save.

“We had been let off the hook and we could get forward from there, but we didn’t pick up the right people after the next corner and Smith put his chance away.

“When you concede an early goal it can be hard to build some momentum.”

There is no doubting Charlton are finding goals hard to come by this season after finding the target just 14 times in the Championship to date, only this coming weekend’s opponents Yeovil having scored less.

Morrison admitted: “We have been quite good defensively and haven’t conceded too many goals, but just by looking at the ‘goals for’ column you can see scoring has been a problem. We do work on it but for whatever reason it is not going our way.

“Obviously we want to score more goals, but unfortunately today we didn’t really create many chances.

“But I think a lot of that was down to Ipswich, I thought they were very organised and compact and they made it really difficult for us.”

Before their weekend trip to the West Country, Charlton first face travelling to Reading tomorrow night.

The Addicks have put in some outstanding away performances both this season and last, and Morrison believes they should take heart from this.

“It will be a tough game on Tuesday and then we have a really big game on Saturday against Yeovil,” he said.

“We will concentrate on Tuesday because we have got to get the lads right for that game. We have gone to places and won against big teams last year and this year so there is no reason why we shouldn’t be confident.

“Hopefully we can get a result at Reading and we will definitely go into the game thinking we can.”
