Sutton United 1-0 Bromley
1:15pm Monday 21st October 2013 in Sport
BROMLEY can have few complaints after being beaten at promotion rivals Sutton United on Saturday.
Sitting in second place going into the game, the Lillywhites were completely outplayed by third-placed Sutton United, who dominated virtually throughout the 90 minutes.
The opening exchanges were very subdued with play mainly restricted to the middle third of the pitch. Jay May charged down home keeper Tom Lovelock’s clearance, but the ball ran out for a goal kick before Mitchell Nelson’s 40 yard volley was dropped by Bromley stopper Joe Welch.
However, the custodian recovered just as it was about to cross the line.
Brendan Kiernan over ran the ball after a penetrating run took the wide man into the danger zone.
Sutton then took a grip on the game with Dean McDonald shooting wide from a central position, Jamie Taylor getting around the back of Jack Holland only to screw wide with only Welch to beat before another McDonald effort went wide.
Bradley Goldberg was eased off the ball deep in Sutton territory just before the break and a quick break ended with ex-Lillywhite Ali Fuseini missing the target from close range from a left wing cross.
Welch did well to tip around Craig Dundas’ fierce shot before he saved a close range header from Jamie Stuart from the resultant corner.
Bromley should have opened the scoring at the start of the second period.
Along ball out of defence was flicked on by Goldberg to put May in the clear, but Lovelock just managed to get enough on the ball to divert the Bromley striker’s goal-bound shot behind for a corner.
The miss was to prove costly as Sutton scored the only goal of the game four minutes later.
Dundas turned a defender on the byline to roll a pass across the face of the goal for Jamie Slabber to touch home with the aid of the far post.
Nelson’s 30-yard free-kick was parried by Welch before being cleared and Slabber missed an open goal from six yards as he put his header over the bar.
In an isolated attack, Goldberg’s free-kick from the edge of the area did not trouble the Sutton keeper.
Another long free-kick by Nelson went narrowly wide for the hosts before Fuseini’s shot on the turn also went narrowly wide. Bromley should have snatched an unlikely point in the final minute.
Jack Holland and Pierre Joseph-Dubois combined to work a pass through to Goldberg, who instead of shooting first time, chose to take a touch and Lovelock was able to take the ball off the strikers foot.
There was still time for Sutton to mount one last attack as Nelson put Dale Binns through on goal, but Welch denied the striker with a fine block at the foot of the post.
Bromley remain second in the table, four points behind leaders Eastleigh and one point ahead of Sutton.
The Lillywhites travel to Maidenhead United on Saturday (3pm).
