CHARLTON defender Dorian Dervite was left disappointed following Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Middlesbrough.

The defeat means the Addicks have begun the Championship campaign with back-to-back defeats after Lukas Jutkiewicz scored a scrappy second half winner for Boro.

But despite the frustrating loss, Dervite fully expects the squad to bounce back, starting at Barnsley next weekend.

The Frenchman said: “It was disappointing, especially at home in our first game.

“We wanted to do well in front of the fans.

“For us it was very important to get at least one point, so it is very frustrating but we must look forward now and think about the next game.

“A point probably would have been fair but this is football, you cannot control everything.

“We are all disappointed but we must work hard next week and take the next game and go for the three points.”

Charlton boss Chris Powell had experimented with a shorter passing style of football in pre-season, which the side tried to implement on Saturday with little effect.

Once the Addicks fell behind, they returned to a more direct method and Dervite believes a mixture of the two ways of playing could be the key to turning their poor early season form around.

The defender said: “Chris Powell was disappointed for the result, as well as how we managed the game.

“Towards the end he thought we could have played direct and more simple.

“We didn’t do it that well. We know for the next game we have to play more direct and be more dangerous in the opponent’s box.

“In the first half we just tried to play, we have got a lot of decent players who are very good with the ball and after we conceded the goal, we tried to play a bit more direct to the two frontmen.

“We tried to get the ball forward quicker but it didn’t work out at the end for us.

“It is good if we can mix it up.

News Shopper: Boro loss hard to take for Charlton defender

“Sometimes you need to get the ball forward, play longer and get the ball into the other half to make things harder for the other defenders.

“But sometimes you have to play from the back and play short and I think we have to find a good combination between playing long and short.”

The Addicks struggled to threaten Jason Steele in the Middlesbrough goal for the majority of the match and were often sloppy in possession.

And the decisive goal they conceded was equally disappointing, Jutkiewicz looping a header in from Grant Leadbitter’s corner following a misunderstanding in the Addicks’ backline.

Dervite felt Boro were fortunate to have been awarded a corner but admitted the controversial flag-kick should have been dealt with much more efficiently.

He said: “First it was a corner given against us when I think it should have been a goal-kick.

“After there was a lack of communication and they scored, but we have to bounce back and look forward now.”
