I refer to Mr Cowley's letter regarding volunteers at Belvedere police station where he has drawn comparisons between this and Dads Army.

Perhaps Mr Cowley is not old enough to remember the last war but history and the people of the British Isles remember with thanks at a certain time in the conflict the Home Guard was largely the only force available to withstand the threat of invasion by Nazi Germany.

This force was made up of experienced servicemen from the previous war and people too young to enlist as adults.

Of course it would be ideal to have all stations manned by full-time experienced officers but think of the additional costs which would be reflected in the rise in council tax. I expect this would give rise to many letters to the local papers.

Has it occurred to Mr Cowley volunteers can bring with them a wide range of experiences from varying occupations in which they have been employed and are able to utilise this knowledge to the benefit of the community?

The suggestion they are amateurish does not hold water, which would become evident if he applied for selection.
