Kent captain Sam Northeast is hoping for a repeat of their 23-run Beckenham success over Surrey when the Spitfires host Gloucestershire at the County Ground on Friday.

The 25-year-old has flourished since taking the captaincy from Rob Key, who remains in self-imposed exile in white-ball cricket, scoring 330 runs in Kent’s five Twenty20 matches this season.

Northeast’s form continued into the fixture against rivals Surrey at Beckenham last Friday with the batsman hitting a handful of fours and seven maximums in a superb 96 off just 47 balls to propel Kent to 193-3.

“It was important that we bounced back in this game after being beaten so heavily at Lord’s,” Northeast said.

“We had a long discussion after that game and a lot of plans were drawn up for this match.

“The main thing is that we executed those plans, and the character of the team shone through – it really was a great win.

“We are a young team with no overseas players and perhaps we are a bit inconsistent because of that.

“But there’s a lot of talent in our dressing room and I am sure there is more to come from these players.”

Northeast also spoke highly of Fabian Cowdrey, who scored 42, and bowler Calum Haggett, who recorded figures of 1-27, as Surrey fell 23 runs short despite some powerful hitting from Moises Henriques (63) and Kumar Sangakkara (34).

The former England U19 player said: “I feel in great nick and hopefully I can keep that going, but Fabian Cowdrey also played a fine knock and kept the momentum of our innings going brilliantly.

“Calum bowled superbly and deserves a lot of credit too.

“He gives us a real calmness, he just hits his lengths and puts pressure on the opposition.

“I’ve got great faith in him and all of our bowlers actually, and as captain it makes my job a lot easier knowing we can bowl to our areas and restrict teams.

“Our death bowling has been good in all our games so I was confident of defending our total when we got to the final overs.”

Jimmy Adams’ team followed-up their impressive Beckenham victory with a sensational win over Somerset at Taunton on Sunday, with Northeast scoring a magnificent 51-ball century as Kent posted a mammoth 227-7.

Chris Gayle smashed an unbeaten 151, including 15 sixes, but the Spitfires stuck to their task admirably to triumph by three runs.

And Kent’s skipper is confident the team can continue their fine form in south-east London on Friday against Gloucestershire.

“Beckenham feels like home for all the guys,” Northeast said.

“It’s great to come to a place and feel comfortable, everyone enjoys playing here.

“There’s always a good crowd, a good pitch and we’re all really looking forward to the game.

“Hopefully we can keep this run going.”
