AN MCC XI will visit Belvedere Cricket Club later this month to mark the club’s centenary.
The match will take place on July 26 (11am) at the War Memorial Ground, 102a Woolwich Road, Abbey Wood, and organisers are keen for any former Belvedere players to come along and share in the day’s celebrations.
Belvedere has produced many fine players since it’s foundation as the Erith Technical Institute Association CC 100 years ago, but none more renowned than Alan Knott.
He went onto play for Kent and England and was described by Mike Brearley as a genius, not only for his wicket keeping, an art in which he peerless in his time, but also for his batting, which was both audacious and increasingly unorthodox.
His brother Frank remained with the club for many years as a player and coach to many boys who have all enjoyed playing senior cricket for the club.
