MORE than 1,000 spectators turned up at Bexley Cricket Club on Friday to watch the Lashings take on a student XI representing the Leigh Academies Trust.

A corporate lunch for nearly 300 guests preceded the game and a spectacular auction of holidays and sporting memorabilia raised a considerable sum of money to support the education of youngsters within the Trust.

Lashings won the toss and chose to bat on a beautiful day.

Some inspired bowling and fielding from the students restricted Lashings to 80-5 at one stage and it took Min Patel’s quick-fire 62 to boost the score to 176-8 off their 30 overs.

Jas Bassan claimed the prize wicket of Inzaman Ul-Haq and Sanjay Hundal bowled six economical overs for just 18 runs.

A tight game looked to be on the cards as the students eased to 100-3, with excellent knocks from Angus Dalgleish (31) and Harry Furze (40).

However, the likes of Courtney Walsh and Saqlain Mushtaq then turned the screw and the students collapsed to 108 all out.

Despite the result, a magnificent day was had by all involved and a rematch has been provisionally penciled in for July 4 next year, again at Bexley CC.
