Lee Bowyer thinks Charlton were the better team in their play-off semi-final exit to Shrewsbury.

The Addicks lost 1-0 in both legs - and missed crucial chances at the Valley on Thursday.

Carlton Morris’ second-half winner today condemned Charlton to another season in League One - but Bowyer thinks his side should be going to Wembley to face Scunthorpe or Rotherham.

He said: “On paper they scored two goals and we scored none but over the two legs were they the better team? I’d have to say no.

“In the first-half on Thursday, I thought we were by far the better team. In the second-half, they hit us on the break a few times but they didn’t hurt us and we missed too many chances.

“Today was the same. We were by far the better team. We knew how they were going to play and that’s why they haven't changed all season.

“They're a physical side who win a lot of second balls. They play from there in the final third - that’s what they do - and they're good at it. You've got to respect them.

“Before these two games, I said I respect the way they play, you have to. They finished third. We were the better team but unfortunately the result doesn't show that.”

The return of Tariqe Fosu gave Charlton hope heading into their games against Shrewsbury.

He was a 62nd-minute substitute in the first leg and played over an hour at New Meadow.

Bowyer said: “It’s hard, he’s been out injured and we rushed him back. That’s why he came off - his hamstring tightened up.

“It was always going to be a gamble starting him but I felt he was that one player to make something happen.

“That’s why I played the diamond because I thought 70 per cent of the ball was going to be in that central area.

“They play long and look to get the second balls so I thought playing the diamond was the thing to do because once we won the ball we’d have an overload in the midfield i.e. Tariqe.

“We kept the ball well after 10 minutes when we realised you just have to keep passing and then eventually someone will be free.

“Unfortunately it was just that final third and it’s that final third where games are won and lost.”
