Jason Pearce says Charlton will make Sunday’s referee Jeremy Simpson aware of Shrewsbury’s “time-wasting”.

Addicks caretaker boss Lee Bowyer accused the Shrews of slowing the game down in their play-off semi-final first leg defeat at the Valley last night.

Jon Nolan’s 80th-minute goal means Charlton must score at New Meadow to stand any chance of making it to Wembley.

Valley captain Pearce, 30, told News Shopper: “It [the time-wasting] was frustrating, but if we’re in their position we’d do the same.

“It’s just part of football. It’s another 90 minutes to play for and we’ve got enough time to get a couple of goals to try to win the tie.

“It’s possible [that Shrewsbury will waste time again]. We’ll make sure we’re on to the ref and that he’s fair with that.”

Charlton reignited their play-off push with a 2-0 win at Shrewsbury last month. It was the start of important victories over Portsmouth and Blackburn which saw them clinch sixth spot.

Pearce, who scored in the triumph against the Shrews, believes the Addicks have a psychological edge over their promotion rivals.

He said: “We’ve got to take that [previous win] on board. That’ll be in the back of our minds that we went up there and won 2-0.

“So we know we can do it, we've got to stay positive. There’s no point being downbeat, thinking we've lost the tie because we haven’t. It’s halfway.

“We would've liked to have gone there with a draw or a win but it wasn't to be and we’ll go again.

“They're a good team and they're good at what they do. They're a physical side but we've got to relish playing in the battle.

“We battled them at the Valley but we've got to go there and out-battle them again and get a result.”

Josh Magennis and Jake Forster-Caskey wasted glorious chances to break the deadlock in the opening six minutes of the play-off tie.

And they would rue those missed opportunities when Nolan’s stunning half-volley broke Charlton hearts.

Pearce added: “It’s been like that a lot this season when we've been on top at times and we haven't taken our chances.

“So it’s disappointing and in football goals change games. When we’re on top we have to take our chances.

“It wasn't to be and they're a good, solid team. When we go back up there it’s going to be a tough, old game.

“But we’re going to go up there and give our all and be positive.”

Charlton were backed by one of their biggest crowds of the season.

The stadium was rocking at times with the Valley faithful cheering their team on.

Pearce said: “It was fantastic to see so many fans there.

“All the fans coming back and getting behind us, it’s just a shame we couldn't get a result for them.

“They saw we gave everything and when the game finished they clapped us off. I know they'll be behind us when we go up there on Sunday.”
