Charlton secured a play-off spot despite losing 1-0 to Rochdale on the final day of the season.

The Addicks ended the regular season in sixth and will take on Shrewsbury in the play-off semi-finals next week.

Joe Thompson’s second-half winner was enough to inflict a first defeat in four games on Charlton and save Rochdale from relegation. With seventh-placed Plymouth losing 5-2 to Gillingham, the Addicks’ top-six position was never in doubt.

Lee Bowyer made four changes to the side that beat Blackburn last weekend with next week’s play-off semi-finals in mind. There were recalls for Jay Dasilva, Joe Aribo, Sullay Kaikai and Michal Zyro.

Charlton survived a huge scare after just seven minutes. Calvin Andrew’s free-kick was spilled by Ben Amos and Ian Henderson somehow turned the rebound on to the post when it looked easier to score.

Charlton, who rested key stars in Nicky Ajose, Josh Magennis and Ben Reeves, threatened on 14 minutes when Aribo shot straight at Josh Lillis from 20 yards.

Amos made up for his earlier error by keeping out Ryan Delaney’s header after seeing it late.

Jake Forster-Caskey went close with two long-range efforts before Ahmed Kashi bravely blocked Oliver Rathbone’s goal-bound effort.

Any Rochdale danger came through their target man Andrew, who won almost every ball in the air, but Kashi’s superb defensive display continued to thwart the hosts.

There were limited chances in the second-half as Callum Camps tested Amos with a stinging strike.

Charlton’s best opening of the game came when Zyro headed over a Mark Marshall cross - Bowyer’s men struggled to offer any kind of serious attacking threat at Spotland.

Rochdale went ahead in the 69th minute, it was a goal that ended up confirming their League One status. Substitute Thompson latched on to an Andrew’s knock-down and directed the ball past Amos.

Despite the introduction of Stephy Mavididi, who looked lively, Charlton failed to respond to the setback in front of 1,161 travelling fans.

Charlton XI: Amos, Konsa, Bauer, Pearce, Dasilva, Marshall, Kashi, Forster-Caskey (Reeves 62), Aribo (Jackson 89), Kaikai (Mavididi 71), Zyro.

Subs not used: Phillips, Sarr, Dijksteel, Magennis.
