Lee Bowyer was not aware of Mark Marshall’s extra training during his omission from the matchday squad.

The Charlton caretaker boss left Marshall out for the 1-0 defeat to Scunthorpe last month.

And on the day of the game, the 30-year-old winger trained in the morning before travelling to the Valley to offer his support.

Bowyer told News Shopper: “It doesn't surprise me. He’s a great professional. When I left him out, it would've hurt him.

“But that’s a commitment that everyone should have when you're a professional because you never know when you’ll be called upon.

“He was called upon for the next game three days later and put in an outstanding performance at Shrewsbury.

“Then he didn't start at Portsmouth, came in on Saturday [against Blackburn] and had another outstanding performance. His work-rate for the team is unreal.

“But that’s the commitment we want from every player, and it’s not just Marshall, every player is showing it at the moment.

“That’s the thing I’ve demanded from them - professionalism and work-rate because everything else is there.

“It’s good to see. I didn't know he came in on the Saturday before the Scunthorpe game to train, but it doesn't surprise me at all. He’s a good lad.”
