Charlton captain Johnnie Jackson will not be in the matchday squad against Blackburn on Saturday, Lee Bowyer has confirmed.

The Addicks assistant manager, 35, is still injured with an achilles problem, so misses what could be his last playing appearance at the Valley if the club fails to make the play-offs.

Caretaker boss Bowyer told News Shopper: “He’s still not fit, [so] he won’t be on the bench.

“Johnnie has been excellent. He works a hell of a lot with the back four. I don't know how many clean sheets we've had, maybe four or five since I’ve taken over, which is probably as many as we’ve had all season.

“So he’s been working very hard with them. We speak on the sidelines when people make changes, so he’s been very good for me to talk to - and I send him a message after every game thanking him.

“You’ve got two people who have been in the game forever. We both know the game inside out, so Johnnie’s been good.”

Jackson has made 278 Charlton appearances during his eight-year spell in SE7, which will come to an end when he retires next month.

Bowyer believes Jackson is part of a dying breed of footballers who stay with one club for so long.

He added: “There are not many players [who stay for long].

“The only player that comes to mind is Mark Noble at West Ham.

“I can’t think of another player in this game today, people just move on. It’s a business now, it’s not so much football.”
