Lee Bowyer believes Charlton winger Mark Marshall took his chance in their win over Shrewsbury last night.
Marshall, who started his first game under Bowyer, impressed the Addicks caretaker manager with his tireless work-rate.
His place in the starting eleven came at the expense of Crystal Palace loanee Sullay Kaikai, who was left out of the matchday squad.
Bowyer told News Shopper: “I left him [Kaikai] at home because he started the last three games and I wanted to give Marshall a go.
“He’s fresh as a daisy and I knew he’d give me that work-rate because if you don't work hard against Shrewsbury, they’ll run over the top of you.
“Marshall came in, I said to him ‘go and show me - tell me you should be starting’ and that’s what he’s done. He’s turned up against Shrewsbury and given 100 per cent, I can’t fault him at all.
“But when he wasn't in the squad on Saturday [in the defeat to Scunthorpe], I said ‘look, we’ve got four games to go after this one, don't think you're not included because you are, but unfortunately, I can only put seven people on the bench.’”
Charlton moved up to fifth thanks to goals from Jason Pearce and Josh Magennis.
Magennis’ all-round performance coupled with a late goal, his tenth of the season, pleased Bowyer.
He added: “I was grateful that he scored for his work-rate and for the effort he put in.
“He won his headers, he held the ball up and his work-rate was unreal.
“I saw him sprinting back in the 88th minute, sprinting into midfield to make their player make a mistake on the ball. He got his goal that he thoroughly deserved.”
