Charlton caretaker boss Lee Bowyer was full of praise for his players after beating Shrewsbury and told them: Enjoy it - but be ready for Portsmouth.

Goals from Jason Pearce and Josh Magennis gave the Addicks a crucial win to lift them up to fifth.

Up next is play-off hopefuls Portsmouth, who are just two points from Charlton.

Bowyer said: “The lads had to stand up and be counted. We've had a couple of disappointing results. Going to Wimbledon and losing the way we did, we got outfought that night. I knew coming here was going to be a much tougher test than Wimbledon.

“Shrewsbury are pushing for the top two. When we played them at our place, they beat us up and won 2-0 and it was comfortable. I’ve been drumming it into the players, if you don't fight, you don't win this game.

“The togetherness they’ve shown out there after two defeats and the work-rate, the team performance, it was outstanding. I’m so proud of them. We played at times as well on a difficult pitch. I was over the moon for Josh to get a goal, his work-rate was phenomenal.

“I had a lot of young players out there, five or six Under-23s and tonight, for me, they all became men.

“We know it’s going to be three more tough games to go and twist and turns to come. If we win them, we’re in the play-offs. It’s as simple as that.

“I said to the players ‘enjoy what’s happened tonight, but get yourselves ready for Saturday because we’ve got to do it all over again.’”
