Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish is leading a consortium to buy Charlton, according to reports.

McLeish, 58, has been seen in the directors’ box for the Addicks’ last two home games.

The Scot is believed to be teaming up with ex-Rangers director and countryman Donald Muir to take over from unpopular owner Roland Duchatelet.

Last week, News Shopper revealed the Belgian tycoon was willing to lower his original asking price of £50m following the unexpected departure of trusted chief executive Katrien Meire.

Muir, a lifelong friend of McLeish, was appointed to the Rangers boardroom in 2009 and oversaw their financial struggles. He has a background in finance.

Duchatelet has been keen to sell Charlton for some time now - and the Daily Record reports he could finally get his wish thanks to Muir and McLeish.

Addicks fans have been demonstrating against Duchatelet for most of his four-year reign in SE7.

He has sold first-team players on the cheap, overseen relegation to League One and claimed supporters “wanted their team to lose” after protests were held before, during and after games.

McLeish, who bossed Birmingham and Aston Villa, hasn't managed since a failed spell in Egypt in 2016.
