Karl Robinson explained his decision to play Jay Dasilva as a winger against Scunthorpe yesterday.

Two moments of individual brilliance from Josh Morris ended Charlton’s nine-game unbeaten league run.

And despite having attackers Joe Dodoo and Karlan Ahearne-Grant available, Robinson opted to start Dasilva further forward with Naby Sarr filling in at left-back.

The 19-year-old defender rejoined the Addicks on loan from Chelsea in July following a previous spell at the Valley last season.

Speaking about the tactical tweak at Glanford Park, Charlton manager Robinson told News Shopper: “Scunthorpe's right-back is the most offensive right-back in the league. So we knew from watching their games that we needed to get a bit of height.

“From an offensive perspective, not having Ben Reeves, Billy Clarke and Tariqe Fosu, we knew we were scraping the barrel a bit but it [the change] worked.

“We didn't mind our left winger not getting involved because we felt our number 10 would be the dominant player in the team - and Ricky Holmes was outstanding in the first 60 minutes.

“Before we signed Jay last season, I went to watch him play for Chelsea and he was playing as a left winger. I know he can play as a 10 behind the striker.

“Naby Sarr is top drawer on the ball and gives us extra height and security away from home.

“With Karlan [Ahearne-Grant] or one of the young players playing against Scunthorpe, I felt it would've been a chore for them doing their defensive duties.”
