Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet has given Karl Robinson a guarantee that he will be backed financially if the club are still in the promotion race in January.

The Addicks beat Fleetwood 3-1 thanks to a Tariqe Fosu hat-trick to move up to fifth place on Saturday. They are just five points away from Wigan, who occupy the automatic promotion spots with Shrewsbury.

Charlton need to bring in another striker to compete with Josh Magennis with Joe Dodoo failing to make an impact since his loan move from Rangers.

And Duchatelet has told Robinson he will provide the necessary funds to ensure Charlton return to the Championship.

When asked if Duchatelet has given him any guarantees over January transfer business, Valley boss Robinson said: “Yes. You’re going to get me in trouble with the owner!

“I think the owner knows. We felt it was too late to do anything at the beginning of the season - it would've been a risk [to sign more players].

“I back myself and my players. It’s hard sometimes as a manager when you can’t get exactly what you want.

“But we felt having a small squad was important and then if we’re close enough [to promotion in January] it’s less of a risk.

“There’s less time for things to go wrong. Listen it’s going to be hard to find better than what we’ve got.”

Mark Marshall and Ben Reeves returned against Fleetwood to bring some much-needed depth to the squad.

And Robinson knows how small his promotion-chasing squad is.

He added: “Look at our match-day programme, take those seven or eight academy players off it who I think have played a minute between them all. Look at the rest of the squad, it’s one of the smallest squads in the league.

“And if this team can keep doing what they're doing and get to January - I’ve been told we can push on. And that is a very strong and positive place to be in.

“Last year, there were too many players here, who were training on Saturdays or two players not getting on the bench and you want that close-knit team where everyone plays their part. And now that’s quite evident.”
