Ben Reeves says Charlton’s ambition was one of the reasons why he signed for the club.

The Addicks offered Reeves a contract in May after the midfielder chose to leave MK Dons.

The Northern Ireland international, who played under Charlton boss Karl Robinson at the Dons, kept his options open during the summer - and put pen to paper on a two-year deal in August.

The Addicks have signed League One proven players such as Mark Marshall and Billy Clarke, while handing new contracts to Ricky Holmes and Jason Pearce.

And Charlton’s impressive summer business coupled with his own need for change played a part in Reeves joining the club.

He told News Shopper: “I’ve got a good relationship with Karl, not to say I didn't have a good relationship with the MK manager and the whole club.

“It was just a decision I had to make for myself to move on and get a change and a different environment because I want to kick on again.

“It’s a good squad here and the manager is bringing in players from different clubs and looking to strengthen. That really brought me in and the fact that we kept players as well was a big sign for me.

“I want to get promoted and I’m sure the boys here do as well. It was a big thing for me [Charlton’s summer business].

“But it wasn't just about that, I want to play football and I want to play well. They play nice football here and have good players so I’m sure I can link up well with them.”

Reeves was without a club for most of the summer and did not have a pre-season.

Robinson has been building up Reeves’ fitness, with the former Southampton man featuring in cup games.

He scored his first goal in just his second appearance for the Addicks in their 2-0 midweek Checkatrade Trophy win over Crawley.

Reeves is likely to start on the bench against Oldham on Saturday, and faces a battle with in-form Billy Clarke for the number 10 role.

He added: “There are a lot of boys who can play in that role, some of us can play out wide or a little deeper, as well.

“But it’s just good that we've got a good balance in the squad and good competition. It can only bode well for us throughout the season.

“I’m feeling good and we’ll see what the gaffer does. The boys have been playing well and I’m sure they’ll keep their spots and the main thing is for us to keep winning.

“I wanted to hit the ground running straight away and hopefully I can start now. I feel like there’s still a lot more to come. I suppose there were moments against Crawley, but I’m still a little bit off it so I’m sure it’ll come soon.”
