George Lapslie dreams of becoming Charlton captain one day.

Lapslie, 19, scored on his senior debut for the Addicks in their 2-0 win over Crawley in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday.

The young midfielder, who has skippered Charlton academy teams, replaced Ben Reeves in the second-half and made an impressive mark on the game.

When asked if he harbours hopes of captaining his boyhood club, Lapslie said: “That’s a massive dream, but I’m only 19.

“There will be a lot of people in front of me for that. I only made my debut today, so I don't know. It’s obviously a dream but I’m not going to be in the clouds.”

Taylor Maloney joined Lapslie in making his senior debut, coming on as a late substitute.

Charlton fielded 10 academy graduates on the night with Aaron Barnes and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild starting their first competitive games.

Lapslie is confident that the Addicks youngsters will get a chance to shine under boss Karl Robinson.

Robinson has an impressive record when it comes to developing players - the Liverpudlian gave a 16-year-old Dele Alli his debut at MK Dons.

Lapslie added: “With the gaffer, I definitely see myself and Taylor and every youngster having a chance.

“He’s proven that if you perform, he will take you and trust you as he did with Reeco when he came on against Exeter, he played the next game at Plymouth.

“So, do I feel there’s a chance for us? I definitely feel there’s a chance for us but it’s just up to us to take it.

“I haven't set myself targets. When I get my chance, I don't want to disappoint.

“That’s my main target. You can’t call the amount of games you're going to play because it’s not always in your control. Sometimes it will fall down to other players’ match fitness.”

Lapslie knows that if you are good enough, you will get the opportunity to play for Charlton’s first-team.

Ademola Lookman, Joe Gomez, Lee Bowyer and Scott Parker are timely reminders of how good the Addicks’ academy set-up is.

Charlton sold Lookman to Everton in an £11m deal in January, and the winger is now playing European football.

Lapslie said: “Some great players have come through the academy.

“Joe Gomez, Kasey Palmer, Jordan Cousins and Callum Harriott are big names in the footballing world playing in the Championship or Premier League.

“So, you’re definitely at the right place to be if you're a youngster.”
