Charlton won their first away game of the season after beating Rotherham 2-0 on Saturday.

Patrick Bauer opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Josh Magennis’ second-half strike ended the contest.

Here are five things we learned…

Josh Magennis is delivering

Magennis came under heavy criticism from Charlton fans after missing numerous chances in the 2-0 defeat to Plymouth two weeks ago. But since then, he’s scored in two successive league games.

He failed to have any real kind of impact against Rotherham until his goal - but that’s his most important job - to score.

If he keeps up his early season form, especially with better players around him, then there is no reason why he can’t net 15 to 20 goals in the 2017/18 campaign.

Jason Pearce and Patrick Bauer brilliance

Coming into the contest, Rotherham’s biggest threat was 6ft 5ins striker Kieffer Moore, who had scored four goals in their first three league games.

But Pearce and Bauer gave the frontman an afternoon to forget. Bauer dominated him in the air, while Pearce timed his tackles to perfection.

The pair are forming a solid partnership at the back, and with the brilliant Ahmed Kashi sitting in front of them, Charlton are going to be hard to break down.

Charlton fans have the right to feel excited

It’s only been four games, but Karl Robinson and his new-look team have brought back something that’s deserted the Valley in recent years - HOPE.

The attractive brand of football coupled with the defensive stability is bringing in the results. Charlton have seen off play-off hopefuls Bristol Rovers and Northampton, and beaten promotion favourites Rotherham.

The win at the New York Stadium was a real statement of intent from Robinson’s men, who have got Addicks supporters excited again.

Karl Robinson’s humorous nature matches his managerial skills

Rotherham fans were incensed when they thought Chris Solly had fouled Jamie Proctor in the build-up to Magennis’ goal. Solly had outmuscled Proctor, however, the former Bolton striker was substituted with a serious knee injury after falling awkwardly.

And for some reason, the home crowd directed their anger to Robinson, who simply smiled back. And, as you can imagine, they didn't take too kindly to that.

The Addicks boss was loving it - and rightly so.

Semi Ajayi proves the grass isn't always greener on the other side

A product of Charlton’s renowned academy, Ajayi left the Addicks for Arsenal in 2013 without making a senior appearance for the club.

But his development stalled with the Gunners and the defender joined Championship side Cardiff two years later. Again, struggling for first-team football, he was shipped out on loan to AFC Wimbledon, Crewe Alexandra and Rotherham, before signing for the latter on a permanent deal in March.

His lack of game-time since leaving Charlton showed yesterday when he was bullied by Magennis.

Addicks starlet Ezri Konsa has been attracting interest from Premier League clubs, and he should look at how far Ajayi has fallen, before choosing his next move.
