Karl Robinson has praised the Charlton board for flying his squad out to Plymouth.

The Addicks made the long coach journey to Exeter for their 2-1 Carabao Cup first-round win on Tuesday.

And with an away trip to Plymouth just four days later, they would have had another lengthy drive.

But Robinson asked the board if his squad could get a flight to Exeter Airport for the Plymouth clash - and the Addicks hierarchy booked it. Now, the team are set to fly out tomorrow morning.

The Charlton boss said: “I requested flying out. I just felt the journey time was ridiculous. “Someone told me the other day, it took Plymouth 11 hours to get from their ground to Peterborough.

“Some of our staff who came back from Exeter, it took them six, seven hours to come back because of the traffic.

“It’s a long way and being able to fly there, gives us no excuses, no fatigue, the players who will be playing will be fresh.

“There is very minimal flying to Exeter - and then it’s an hour down to Plymouth. It’s a functional way - it used to be the Charlton way for a number of years at the top level.

“The club have backed that, the board have said ‘yes - don’t get used to it!’ But they’ve seen playing Exeter away, winning the game, there will be more money coming through. So, it gives us that little bit of leeway with the budget to go and do other things.

“The board were brilliant, they were really supportive of that. They just said ‘go and win, that’s your objective’. Jacko [Johnnie Jackson] said to me ‘there are no traffic lights in the sky!”

Meanwhile, Robinson is aware of the threat Charlton face against Plymouth.

The Pilgrims have lost their first two games of the campaign, including a 5-0 drubbing to Bristol City in the Carabao Cup.

Despite their poor start to the season, Robinson is refusing to underestimate his opponents, who won promotion to League One last term.

He added: “The manager made a number of changes away at Bristol City. So, at this stage of the year, I don't think anybody has got too many defeats under their belt to suffer a losing mentality.

“We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do, we know our game plan. We’re very clear on our instructions to the players. We’re going to make it a very difficult afternoon for them, hopefully. But they’ll equally make it difficult for us, they’re a very strong and physical team.

“Don’t forget, it’s their very first game at home, they’ve had two away games. They’ll be saying ‘let’s start our campaign off where it matters’. It’s a massive game for both clubs.

“We want to keep our winning run going, we want to get that winning mentality that breeds success and confidence.

“We know how good they’re going to be. And not for one moment, do I look at their team on Tuesday and think it’ll have any correspondence to what happens on Saturday.”
