Charlton got their League One campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 triumph against Bristol Rovers.

Despite being down to 10-men for 84 minutes following Lee Novak’s dismissal, Patrick Bauer’s 38th-minute goal proved to be the winner.

Here is how News Shopper rated Charlton’s players…

Ben Amos - 4 - A very shaky competitive debut from Amos. He was very lucky not to be punished by Rovers after spilling a free-kick. Never looked comfortable coming for crosses.

Chris Solly - 5 - Struggled in the air against Ellis Harrison, and lost the ball too many times.

Patrick Bauer - 9 - Dominant in the air and in his tackles. Powerful header to give the Addicks the lead. He could reach double figures in goals this season. He was Charlton’s best defender in the second-half. Man of the match.

Jason Pearce - 8 - Leadership skills were quality once again. Worked really well with Bauer. Ezri Konsa has a fight to get his place back.

Jay Dasilva - 7 - Gave Charlton an out-ball on the left. Attacked and defended brilliantly.

Ahmed Kashi - 8 - Controlled the game, like he always does, and never lost the ball despite being outnumbered in midfield.

Jake Forster-Caskey - 6 - Quiet game for Forster-Caskey, who didn’t get forward as much he would've liked due to the numerical disadvantage. Superb last-ditch tackle to prevent Tom Nichols from scoring in the second-half.

Tariqe Fosu - 7 - Was willing to run at Rovers’ back-line when given the chance. A few of his long, mazy runs took the pressure off Charlton’s defence.

Billy Clarke - 6 - Playing almost like a striker after Novak’s dismissal, his work-rate was admirable.

Ricky Holmes - 8 - Like Fosu, Holmes pushed Charlton up the pitch when they needed to relieve pressure. Assisted Bauer’s goal.

Lee Novak - 4 - This was his chance to impress given Josh Magennis’ absence, but his return to the starting eleven lasted just six minutes.
