Former Charlton Athletic midfielder Scott Parker has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36, it has been announced.

Parker, who was born in Lambeth, began his career at The Valley and made his first-team debut as a substitute against Bury in August 1998.

After signing a new contract a few months later, he would spend time on loan at Norwich City before returning to replace an injured Mark Kinsella in midfield.

The Addicks would achieve promotion in 2000 to the Premier League under manager Alan Curbishley, and Parker would become the club’s Player of the Year in 2003 and then PFA Player of the Year the following season.

Following a £10 million move to Chelsea which lasted only one season, he would feature for three other London clubs and become involved in the national team setup with 18 caps over the course of a decade.

Across his 19-year career, Parker appeared more than 500 times and scored 36 goals for the seven clubs he played for.

He is the brother-in-law of Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter and has been in a relationship with his sister, Carly, for more than 15 years and has four sons.
