Russell Slade insists Charlton can still achieve a top-six finish despite going seven league games without a win.
The Addicks last tasted victory in League One on August 20 and lost their third game of the season against Rochdale on Saturday.
The result leaves Slade’s side 18th in the division ahead of the international break.
When asked about the team’s aims this season, Slade said: “I’ve always said, and it won’t change, that top six is what we are looking to achieve.
“We need to do that with a solid foundation, that’s for sure. We’ve started the process with the new players and are getting new combinations.”
The frustration was clear at the Valley on Saturday as Charlton were beaten by Keith Hill’s Rochdale.
Slade insisted he felt for the supporters and said his side needed to show a desire and an attitude to recover from the slump.
The 55-year-old said: “I feel for the players and the fans that we’re not getting the results. There’s nothing wrong in terms of the work ethic or the attitude but at the minute things are not happening – this can happen in football.
“We need to show mental toughness and roll our sleeves up and work even harder to get out of this spell which is so frustrating for everybody.”
