Russell Slade said Charlton let themselves down after surrendering a lead to be beaten 2-1 at home to AFC Wimbledon.

The Addicks dominated from the outset and took the lead in the eighth minute through the impressive Ademola Lookman.

But Charlton wasted a number of glorious chances before Dominic Poleon and Tyrone Barnett scored late goals to seal a surprise win for the Dons.

Slade said: “You can have quality and we showed some real quality at times today individually. But collectively we need to also have that resilience and know-how and will to see a game out.

“We are all hurt, of course we are. We feel we’ve let ourselves down today and it is a concern that we’ve conceded four goals in two games now.

“We need to be a lot tighter than that if we’re going to be successful and get to where we want to get.”

Lookman, who was the subject of a bid from Crystal Palace on deadline day, went close in the first minute but smashed a shot wide.

Dons winger Andy Barcham saw a close-range effort blocked by Morgan Fox in a rare chance for the visitors, before Lookman put Charlton ahead.

The 18-year-old cut in from the left and beat stopper James Shea with a strike from 20 yards.

Summer signing Ricky Holmes could have doubled the advantage but Shea was on hand to deny the former Northampton man.

Nicky Ajose then had two chances to put the game to bed but failed to hit the target with both efforts – Lookman was also denied a first-half brace by a late Shea save.

Slade’s side continue to dominate after the break and Holmes forced Shea into a spectacular save on 53 minutes.

Another chance was wasted with 20 minutes remaining – this time Northern Ireland international Josh Magennis was guilty of missing the target with a close-range header.

The Dons equalised when Poleon showed great skill to beat his man and slot a shot past the helpless Declan Rudd.

And Charlton were made to pay for their wasted chances five minutes later as Barry Fuller’s delivery was superbly headed home by substitute Barnett.

Despite a late save from Shea to deny Lookman, the hosts were unable to strike again as their seven-game unbeaten run came to an end.

Slade, 55, bemoaned his side’s wastefulness in front of goal and said Charlton needed to be more ruthless with their finishing.

“It’s a cruel game isn’t it, sometimes? I’ve just looked at the opportunities we’ve had – 12 of them – and we’ve only taken one. Wimbledon have had two and scored from them,” Slade added.

“Fair play to them, they stayed in the game. Whilst it was 1-0 there was always an opportunity for them to get back in the game.

“We managed and controlled large parts of the game but my team need to learn to be ruthless and efficient.”

Charlton travel to League One leaders Scunthorpe on Tuesday evening and Slade insisted he will demand a reaction following the Dons defeat.

He said: “We don’t have an awful lot of time until Tuesday so we want a reaction – a positive reaction – after that result.

“We have to improve, there’s no doubt about that. I ask for improvement every week and I’ll be demanding it again before Tuesday’s game.”
