Nicky Ajose says he only cares about Charlton returning to the Championship, even if it means his goalscoring form takes a hit.

The former Swindon striker, who bagged 24 goals in League One last season, opened his Addicks account with a brace in the 2-1 win at Walsall on Saturday.

The result extended Charlton’s unbeaten run to three games, recovering well from the opening-day defeat to Bury.

When asked by News Shopper whether he has any personal targets to reach this season, Ajose said: “I want to get promoted.

“If that means me scoring however many, or not scoring many, that’s all I care about, really.

“It’s my job to create and score goals and hopefully I can do that in a team which is successful which means promotion for us.”

He added: “I came here to win and to be at the top-end of the league.

“If I wanted to score as many goals as possible, I would've stayed at Swindon, it would've suited me perfectly. I came here to win things and that was the main reason.”

Ajose insists Charlton have the right mix of players to go back up to the Championship at the first time of asking.

The 24-year-old said: “We’ve got some real experience and some good young players like Ademola [Lookman], who everyone knows about.

“But, Ezri [Konsa] has come in and he’s been outstanding - he’s probably been our best player.

“We have a real good mix. Lads who know what it takes to win, and lads who are hungry.”

Ajose’s double on the weekend sees him tied with Johnnie Jackson and Ricky Holmes as the club’s top goalscorer.

“We’ll see how it ends up,” was the hitman’s answer when quizzed about who will be top at the end of the season.
