Johnnie Jackson believes Russell Slade’s new-look Charlton have the makings of a good side.

The Addicks endured a poor start to the season, suffering defeats at Bury and Cheltenham Town.

But Slade’s squad responded by picking up four points from their home fixtures against Northampton and Shrewsbury.

Jackson admits it has taken a while for the players to settle but believes Charlton are beginning to show promising signs.

He said: “We want to keep improving and it is early and we tried to stress that it wasn’t going to happen straight away with a lot of new players and a new manager.

“It’s a constant learning process to get where we want to be.

“It’s one win and we’ve got a long, long way to go but I think you’re starting to see the things we’re putting into practice on the training ground.

“I think in the second-half last Saturday and against Shrewsbury in spells you saw the makings of a good side.”

Jackson was an integral member of the Charlton side that secured automatic promotion from League One in 2012.

The skipper admitted it would be difficult to build another squad like that but said there is a good feeling around the current dressing room.

“It’s early days but it has got right blend and a good feel about the dressing room,” Jackson said.

“It has a bunch of lads who want to work hard and that is a key ingredient in any squad.

“That promotion squad was something special, probably hard to build it like that again.

“I’m sure the gaffer is trying to add one or two to help us on the way with the right attitude and quality. We’ve definitely got the start of something good.”

Charlton experienced a miserable season on and off the pitch last year with relegation from the Championship confirmed by April.

And when asked whether he feels the scars from last season have been healed, Jackson said: “I’d like to think so.

“All we can do is work hard when we go out on the pitch - the fans want to see a team they can be proud of. We’ve got the makings of that.

“If we can sprinkle in quality we’re going to win games and create that feel-good factor around the place.

“Results are going to be key to getting that spirit back but it feels like we are on the way.”
