Summer signing Josh Magennis has settled into life at Charlton fantastically, according to manager Russell Slade.

Magennis joined the Addicks last week from Kilmarnock and featured against Northampton Town and Shrewsbury.

Slade felt the Northern Ireland international was unfortunate not to open his account for the club against the Shrews and believes a goal is just around the corner.

“Josh has settled in fantastically,” Slade said when asked about the powerful forward.

“He’s a really nice fella and he wants to be here, not only to play for this football club but to do well for us.

“I just think he will get stronger and fitter over the coming weeks and will get better and better.

“He was unfortunate not to score on Tuesday and I’m sure there’s one around the corner for him.”

Magennis’ presence ensured fellow summer signing Lee Novak was limited to the bench against Micky Mellon’s Shrewsbury.

The former Birmingham City forward has been nursing a hand injury but Slade insists he will play a big role for the Addicks this season.

“Lee had that injury to his hand but he’s going to be more than an option for us, he will be a big part of what we do this season,” the 55-year-old said.

“Sometimes players will have to fill in maybe in other positions, slightly foreign to them to do a job for the team, especially this season because you can’t use the emergency loan system.”

Ricky Holmes was the hero in midweek as his first-half brace helped fire the home side to a comfortable 3-0 win.

The energetic winger has been on the receiving end of a couple of heavy challenges already this season.

When asked by News Shopper if he fears Holmes will be a player teams target throughout the campaign, Slade said: “Any player that wants to go and drive at the opposition and wants to take players on is going to be somebody who the opposition will look at closely.

“They will want to counteract and do something about it.

“The way he plays he makes defenders make decisions and sometimes they are rash ones.

“He does draw a lot of free-kicks because people do try to stop him in his stride.”
