Josh Magennis believes Charlton have the quality to prove too strong for most of their League One rivals this season.

The Northern Ireland international, who played three games at Euro 2016, became Charlton’s eighth summer signing last week when he penned a two-year deal at the club.

Magennis made his debut for the Addicks in the 1-1 draw with Northampton Town and insists he has been impressed by his new side.

And when asked what he expected from the clash against Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night, Magennis said: “It will be another physical game to be fair.

“If we are able to start the game as we started the second-half [against Northampton], I think we will have not only too much for Shrewsbury but too much for most teams in this league.

“It will only be a matter of time before one drops for us. I know there’s a performance in us and we are full of confidence that it is going to come.

“There’s no panic station – we know there’s expectation of being at a club of this stature, but I think we’ve got the personalities that are able to accept that and hopefully we can kick on now.”

Russell Slade’s side earned their first League One point of the season against the Cobblers but were forced to come from behind after Alex Revell headed the visitors ahead.

The equaliser came through skipper Johnnie Jackson, who slotted home his 51st goal for the club after being played in by Nicky Ajose.

Magennis, 26, was full of praise for Jackson and said he’s been a fantastic leader since he arrived in SE7.

“Johnnie is well respected in our changing room and he’s been a great leader since I’ve been here,” the former Kilmarnock star added.

“Not only does he give out advice but he’s also a leader that listens to people and takes stuff on board. He’s been fantastic for me.”
