Russell Slade heaped praise on Charlton fans following the 1-1 home draw against Northampton.

Addicks skipper Johnnie Jackson’s 57th-minute equaliser ensured that it was not three defeats from three games for the newly-relegated side.

Alex Revell had given Northampton the lead in the first-half with a looping header - scoring his first goal for the club.

Charlton supporters' unrest towards owner Roland Duchatelet has not cooled down over the summer - there was a protest outside the club shop before the game.

But, Slade admitted the fans were the twelfth man for his side today.

He said: “The fans still appreciated immensely what we had done in the second-half to win a football match. We dominated the game in the second period.

“For the fans to stay behind and applaud the team when we've drawn - it shows something. It’s going to take time and it's frustrating for me on the side.

“It showed me what the fans can be all about - it was like having the twelfth man today. They were driving us on.

“We said we can slide and thread things down the side of the team and it’s exactly what happened. Johnnie [Jackson] finished exceptionally well and it got us back into the game.”

Charlton could have won it at the death but substitute Ademola Lookman’s free-kick was expertly tipped wide of the post.

The youngster brightened up the game when coming on in the second-half, and Slade said he has to be careful with him.

He added: “He was a bit stiff coming out of the game on Tuesday and I thought the timing of bringing him on was right today.

“We gave him a few days when he came back from the international games and we have to be mindful of that, it's a long season.

“Of course he’ll play his part - it's about him gradually making an impact when he’s physically ready.”
