Charlton rejected multiple bids for Callum Harriott before being satisfied with an offer from Reading.

Harriott left the Addicks last week after spending 13 years at the Valley as a youth player and then as a first-team regular.

The 22-year-old notched up over 100 appearances for the South Londoners and Russell Slade insisted he was a good servant for the club.

He told News Shopper: “He had been here for a long time and had been a good prospect and servant to the football club.

“This was an opportunity for him.

“It was always going to be about the level of compensation we could get for losing his services really, if he was going to go.

News Shopper:

“We turned down initial bids from not only Reading, but other clubs as well, so we weren’t just going to let him go.”

Harriott, who played 21 games for Charlton last season, attracted interest from Barnsley earlier in the summer.

But he signed a three-year deal at Reading last Friday and made his debut for the Royals in the opening-day victory against Preston.

Harriott started for Jaap Stam’s side on Tuesday evening as Reading beat Plymouth in the EFL Cup.
